Frequently Asked Questions

Bus Services

How do I find our nearest bus stop?

To find your nearest school bus stop, use our handy maps by going to the Bus Route Information Finder page located in the left-hand side bar.

DBL Capital Region doesn't service my child's school. What can I do?

Submit the standard bus pass application form to our office.

Our nearest bus stop is too far away. What can I do?

Transport for NSW has a Private Vehicle Conveyancing Scheme for those who live more than 1.6 km from their nearest bus stop or if their nearest stop does not service the required school and they need to drive to a nearby interchange.

Depending on where you live, there are also several smaller bus providers who pick up in rural areas to meet our buses at a transfer point. For a list of these providers, please click here. Please note that if you wish to travel with one of these providers, an additional application form must be filled in and processed through that provider.

Bus Passes

Is my child eligible for a free bus pass?

To be eligible for the scheme an applicant must be:

  1. a resident of NSW
  2. 4 years and 6 months of age or older and enrolled as one of the following:

How do I apply for a bus pass for my child?

To apply for a bus pass, you must supply our office with a Transport for NSW Application Form that has been filled in with all of the relevant information about your child and has been verified by the school at which the child is enrolled. This form can be obtained from most school offices or downloaded here and printed.

How do I fill in the Application Form?

If you are having trouble with any area of the form, please see our in-depth guide here.

I've been told my child is "Too close". What does this mean?

As per the eligibility criteria, a child's eligibility is determined by the distance between their home and their school. If your child is found to not meet this requirement using our Transport for NSW issued radial maps, your child will be deemed "Too close".

My child is not eligible for free travel. What can I do?

In the case that your child has been deemed "Too close", you should have received the relevant paperwork in the mail for requesting a review by Transport for NSW based on the walking distance or safety grounds. If Transport for NSW do not approve subsidised travel following this review and you feel that there are special circumstances, you may appeal this decision. Alternatively, if your child is not eligible on any other non-distance related grounds your child can still travel on our school buses by paying per trip to the driver or by purchasing a Term Pass.

I want my child to catch the bus to/from a daycare provider or a friend/relative's house. Can they travel for free on their bus pass?

Unfortunately, no they cannot. Your child's bus pass provides free travel between their home and their school or an interchange if that is as far as we can take them. Any extension or alteration to the trip as printed on the front of the pass will require payment. If the travel is a regular occurrence, we do offer Term Passes which often work out cheaper than paying per trip.

Can my child use their pass on the weekends and holidays?

No. Your child's pass is only to be used to and from school during the school term between the hours of 6 am and 6 pm. They can still travel as they please but they will be required to pay the driver for the trip. Term Passes also cannot be used outside of these times.

My child needs to travel to and from two homes because of a shared custody situation. What do I need to do?

Firstly, this needs to be a 50/50 time share situation. We cannot provide a dual pass if your child only stays at one of the addresses over the weekends. In order to obtain a dual bus pass, you will first need to fill in two separate application forms – one for each address. If the custody arrangement has been made through the courts, these forms can be sent to Transport for NSW with a copy of the court ruling. If the arrangement is purely between the parents, the forms need to be sent to Transport for NSW with a statutory declaration from each parent detailing the time share arrangement.

I've received my child's new bus pass. What do the numbers mean?

Our passes now have four number spaces to show what buses your child is required to catch during their school day. For most students, this will mean four separate numbers, or animal names for Transborder students, as shown here. The first number "AM 1" indicates the bus they will catch from their home to their local interchange, while "AM 2" is the bus they will need to transfer to take them to their school. The third number "PM 1" will take them from their school to their relevant interchange where they will transfer to "PM 2" to carry them back to the nearest stop to their home. In some cases, this number will repeat itself if they go through an interchange but do not change buses.

If "AM 1" or "PM2" shows a hyphen (–) instead of a number, this indicates that that they will be catching a direct through bus from their nearest bus stop to their school. This means they will not be passing through an interchange as is often the case for Jerrabomberra residents.

If "AM" or "PM" shows an 'n' instead of a number, this means that there is no bus that services your nearest bus stop. Generally, this will mean that your nearest bus stop will be your local bus interchange. Sometimes this will only apply in the morning though there may be an afternoon bus all the way back to your nearest stop, or vice versa.
